Homework

Expectations

Fifth Grade has homework every night of the week.  The students should spend about 50 minutes a night on homework and study.

Reading

Fifth graders should spend about 30 minutes reading each night or a total of about 3 to 4 hours per week.

Reading is necessary to build vocabulary, stimulate brain development and practice skill and comprehension strategies.

Common Knowledge:

This is a page of 12 general knowledge questions.  The students are able to work on this at home and at school.  They may use reference books, such as encyclopedias, internet search engines, and in cases of total frustration, parents.  I expect all answers to be in complete sentences, with correct capitalization and punctuation.  This is handed out on Monday and is due on Friday.

Math:

Everyday Math Study Links will be sent home two or three times a week.  These math pages are always due the next day.  On nights that I donŐt send home study links, students should practice multiplication and division basic facts.

Before a unit test students will have a study guide to help them prepare and study for the test.

Spelling:

Students write their spelling words in their planner each week.  We do some spelling practice in class, but these words also need to be practiced at home each night as well.  The test is on Friday.
