SELECTED GRADE LEVEL EXPECTATIONS FOR FOURTH GRADE STUDENTS

Bulleted (•) items are examples of fourth grade expectations, but do not represent the entire curriculum.

READING

Selects and reads a variety of text

• Reads a variety of genre including fiction, non-

fiction and poetry

• Interprets charts, maps, graphs, timelines

• Recognizes format variations in text

Applies strategies and skills

• Sets purpose for reading

• Adjusts rate for purpose and text difficulty

• Rereads and reads ahead

• Uses dictionary, atlas and encyclopedia

• Categorizes information using graphic organizer

• Uses a variety of strategies to build vocabulary

Reads independently

• Summarizes what has been read independently

• Keeps a record of reading

• Identifies strengths and needs as a reader

Demonstrates comprehension in oral and written reading response

Algebraic Concepts

• Using a variable (y) solves addition, subtraction

or multiplication

 Problems (e.g., if y x 3 = 9 and y x 4 = 12 then y

= 3)

• Using a T-chart explain how the change in one

quantity is related to a change in another

• Demonstrate balance and equality in an

equation

Statistics and Probability

• Collect and display data using line, dot plots,

circle, bar graphs or pictographs

• Determines median, mode, range and mean

• Determine and describe the number of

outcomes obtained from a variety of chance

devices

Geometry

• Define, describe and identify similarity,

congruence and symmetry

• Use vocabulary and show examples of: 

parallel, perpendicular, intersecting lines,

angles and rays

• Measure sides and perimeters of geometric

shapes and determine area using standard

units

Measurement

• Find the area of rectangular regions without

using a formula (e.g., counting squares, using

arrays)

• Describe and use units for measuring length,

area, volume, capacity and temperature in U.S.

Customary and metric units

• Measure the length of objects to the nearest

half inch and nearest centimeter

Computation

• Demonstrate addition and subtraction of proper

fractions and mixed numerals 

• Multiply two digits by two digits and three digits

by one digit with regrouping

• Division of three digits by one digit with

remainders

Scientific Investigation

Physical Science

• Describes the properties of water, the water

cycle, landforms shaped by water erosion and

why water is a conserved natural resource in

• Describes how Colorado wildlife is adapted to

• Compares, contrasts, and quantifies Earth’s

characteristics as a planet to other planets in

our solar system

Technology and Careers 

• Identifies careers related to each of the three

investigations

• Identifies technology used in their daily life

Science as a particular way of knowing

• Predicts future events based upon observable

patterns

SOCIAL STUDIES

History

• Places in chronological order significant

people, groups, and events in the history of 

Colorado in various ways

Geography

• Investigates the influence of the geography of

Colorado on the following:

settlement, use of resources and economic

growth

Civics

• Identifies various examples of government prior

to statehood

Economics

• Describes the “boom and bust” economy of

Colorado

*Culture is integrated into all standards

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Demonstrates skills and applies concepts

• Locomotion/Rhythm:  Performs jumping skills (e.g. tinkling skills, 

 Chinese jump ropes, jump bands)

• Body Management:  Transfers weight from feet

to hands combined with rolling, balance and  

locomotors movements

• Manipulative:  Utilizes manipulative skills in a

small game situation 

(E.g. catching, throwing, volleying, striking, kicking, dry
